The Mirror reported yesterday that Hugo Lloris’ future at Tottenham Hotspur had been plunged into doubt after he refused to sign a new contract at the club.
The Frenchman already has a deal running until 2019, and his lack of urgency to renew is in one sense understandable, due to the fact it has three years left to run.
Yet if fans are worried about his commitment into next season, they need not be. Not if comments he made to the club’s official website just last week are anything to go by.

Lloris spoke of his excitement at the team’s prospects for next season, and talked about his desire to be part of future success.
He said: “We’ve built this season in terms of confidence and in terms of performance. I think it will help the team make one more step forward for next season because we know if we start with a strong mentality we can repeat the same kind of season.
“To become a great team you need patience, especially when you build a young team. I think step by step we’re improving individually and collectively and we can feel we’re more competitive and more consistent. I’m confident for the next few years if we keep the same mentality day by day.”
His comments do not read like a player who is angling for a move away, and if he did so this season then it would be more of a surprise than 12 months ago.

In April 2015 The Guardian reported Lloris wanted to move on from Spurs, for the reason that he wanted to play Champions League football.
The club were able to hang onto him, but his desire to do so is understandable, as one of the world’s top goalkeepers, who featured in the competition as a youngster with Lyon.

He did not deserve to be stuck in the Europa League, and now finally this season he has the chance to play in Europe’s elite club tournament, after helping Spurs to a third place finish in the Premier League.
The reports about him turning down a deal may be a little uncomfortable for Spurs supporters to read, but there is really little reason to be alarmed, especially reading what he said just a week ago.
