After all, with the BBC claiming Liverpool are readying a £60million bid of their own, it will take a huge offer to seal a deal at this stage of the transfer window, and if Tottenham really wanted Lemar surely they should have started their negotiations earlier.
The 21-year-old would go down a storm at Spurs and is exactly what Mauricio Pochettino’s side needs. But Tottenham supremo Daniel Levy is famously unwilling to bow to the expectations of rival chairmen and, at this stage of the window, Monaco will know they can squeeze every last penny out of a club desperate to get their man.
Tottenham have the money following the sale of Kyle Walker to Manchester City, but with a new stadium to be paid for, will they really spend the right-back’s transfer fee and then some to get Lemar through the door?
It is a romantic story with deadline day approaching, a suggestion that Levy is about to break the habit of a lifetime and splurge a massive sum on a player who is also likely to command significant wages.
This writer could be wrong and Tottenham could surprise all with a deal the envy of many. But with just three days of the transfer window remaining, it seems nigh on impossible that Spurs will get Lemar in.
If he moves at all, it will be to a club willing to pay whatever it takes and accept any late provisos from a Monaco side with no need to sell following some big-name departures earlier this summer.
