Hear us out… Tottenham fans should be happy with Arsenal’s victory over Manchester City.

For the first time in nearly two decades, Tottenham Hotspur are on the verge of finishing above Arsenal.

It would be no fluke. Tottenham appear to have surpassed the Gunners as a Premier League force, battling for the title while Arsenal scrap desperately for fourth place.

So what would be the worst possible scenario?

This would come in the form of Arsenal getting drastic and deciding to axe Arsene Wenger and bring in a big name replacement, perhaps Diego Simeone.

Arsenal changing their manager would bring about a spending spree and big changes. It would not guarantee a return to the top of English football, but there would be a chance.

This suddenly looks less likely thanks to Arsenal’s FA Cup semi-final victory over Manchester City.

Under Arsene Wenger the Gunners appear to be going nowhere. An FA Cup win would be nice, but it wouldn’t change anything. Just ask Louis van Gaal.

Unlike Manchester United who sacked the Dutchman to bring in a supposedly better coach last summer in Jose Mourinho, Arsenal’s board do not have the same ruthless characteristics, and bemusingly are giving the decision over Arsene Wenger’s future to… Arsene Wenger.

FA Cup semi-final failure would have caused the Frenchman to question his stance that he wants to stay, and left Arsenal’s season on the verge of meltdown.

Now Wenger has secured a nice little distraction, whatever happens in the league, and it might just be enough to ensure he stays put.

For Tottenham this is the ideal solution. Ahead of a campaign where Spurs will have their own challenges due to moving out of White Hart Lane to play home matches at Wembley, they could do with Arsenal continuing to tread water under Arsene Wenger.

Their own FA Cup semi final failure to Chelsea was immensely disappointing and they have their own questions to answer, but Spurs supporters should not be despondent by Arsenal’s success, as it is only a mirage to distract from the directions of the two teams.
