Jan Vertonghen has been in and out of Tottenham Hotspur’s first team this season, including their defeat to the Premier League leaders over the weekend.
Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter have sent mixed signals to reports that Inter Milan are keen on securing the services of Jan Vertonghen.
The Guardian have claimed that Inter manager Antonio Conte is keen to add Vertonghen to his squad, but is ready to wait until next summer to secure his signature – it is said a potential three-year deal awaits the technically gifted Belgian defender.
Centre-back Vertonghen is out-of-contract at Tottenham at the end of the season, and whilst he can leave for a club in January, he is also able to sign a pre-contract agreement.
Vertonghen isn’t the only Spurs player who can sign a pre-contract agreement when the transfer window re-opens, with Christian Eriksen and Toby Alderweireld also in that bracket.
Nonetheless, Spurs supporters didn’t know what to make of the Vertonghen rumours, with some keen to see him leave and others disappointed that he might depart.
A lot has been made about which Spurs players want to stay, and which players don’t, as all the off-field talk is seemingly affecting their performances on the pitch.
Over the course of the season, Vertonghen has been in and out of Mauricio Pochettino’s plans, as he was on the bench for the defeat to Liverpool over the weekend.
Like many players, Vertonghen hasn’t been at his best this season, but during the previous campaign, he did show that he still has it in his locker.
The 32-year-old’s performance against Dortmund in the Champions League was a standout, as it is looking very likely that he will not put pen-to-paper on a new deal.
