He is into the quarter-finals after a 3-2 victory over Japan in the last 16.
Teammate Vertonghen scored the goal to spark Belgium’s comeback, and he is rightly being hailed as a hero.
Alderweireld appreciated Vertonghen’s contribution, and posted a photo on Twitter of the pair celebrating, showing what a special bond they shared.
Alderweireld’s message prompted many a Tottenham fan to smile, and hope that the pair can continue together at the club next season.
The hope from Spurs fans is that playing alongside Vertonghen for Belgium will strengthen his resolve to stay, after an injury interrupted 2017/18 season.
