Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino has implied the defender’s one-year option will be triggered, but some fans think it means he’ll be gone in the summer.

A major – if perhaps a little expected – development has seemingly been announced regarding Toby Alderweireld’s future at Tottenham Hotspur.

In its standard form, the centre-back’s current contract at the north London club runs until the end of the season, with no new deal having been agreed between player and employer as of yet.

According to a report in The Times, Spurs have the option to trigger a one-year extension on Alderweireld’s contract, but it would also give the Belgian a release clause of around £25million that runs up to the last two weeks of the 2019 summer transfer window.

As a result, there had been an impasse for months regarding Alderweireld’s situation – would Tottenham sell him in January? Would they trigger the extension in order to potentially recoup £25m in the summer? Or would the player pen a new contract and that’s the end of it?

Mauricio Pochettino appears to have shed some light on the debacle, having been asked by Football London at Thursday’s press conference whether he would do the same with Alderweireld’s contract as he did with Jan Vertonghen earlier in December.

The Argentine replied: “Yes, for sure. It is obvious. The same situation as Jan.”

Some Tottenham fans took to Twitter to give their opinion on Poch’s words, but there were messages of concern as well as delight, with regards to a fears of a potential poaching in the summer:
