Tottenham Hotspur have been at Wembley for 18 months.

Sam Allardyce made headlines on talkSPORT this morning by suggesting that Tottenham Hotspur stay at Wembley for the duration of the 2018-19 campaign.

Allardyce said Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino should ask chairman Daniel Levy to delay the opening of Tottenham’s new stadium until the beginning of next season.

The North Londoners have been playing their home games at Wembley for 18 months and the former Premier League manager believes that a sudden change of stadium could negatively affect the Lilywhites’ season.

Tottenham fans have been teased with pictures of the 62,000-seater arena for quite some time now, and some supporters have wholly disagreed with Allardyce’s suggestion.

The Daily Mail reported this morning that Tottenham’s new ground will now not be open until Feburary following yet another delay.

And you can sort of see where Allardyce is coming from with this.

It can take a while before a team becomes familiar with playing their home games in a new stadium – just ask Arsenal – and Pochettino’s side might well suffer from leaving Wembley with three months to go this season.

They are only six points behind top-of-the-table Liverpool, and is it unreasonable to suggest that Spurs could be there or thereabouts when they leave Wembley? Do Pochettino and Levy really want to jeopardise silverware?

There are, of course, financial aspects of renting Wembley to take into account, but if it is feasible then maybe, just maybe, Levy should consider Allardyce’s suggestion.
