England suffered late heartbreak in Cesena on Tuesday night, throwing away a 1-0 lead to lose 2-1 to France in their first game of the Under-21 European Championships.

Aidy Boothroyd’s side entered the competition as one of the favourites, and they turned in a decent first half display, but had Dean Henderson to thank for saving Moussa Dembele’s first half penalty.

England then took the lead in the second half as Phil Foden scored a sensational solo goal, but that’s as good as it got for England as Ryan Sessegnon’s tap-in was ruled out for offside on Dominic Solanke.

Hamza Choudhury’s rash challenge saw him pick up a red card, only for Houssem Aouar to miss the subsequent penalty. Sadly for England, France weren’t to be denied.

Jonathan Ikone brought France level inside the final 10 minutes, and they won it late on as Aaron Wan-Bissaka sliced the ball into his own net for a late own goal.

Many England players blew hot and cold on the night, and one of those was winger Sessegnon, who started out on the right flank, cutting inside to support Solanke in attack.

Sessegnon had his moments and was unfortunate to see his goal ruled out, but he didn’t quite hit the heights we’ve seen from him in the past – and Spurs fans have been commenting on his display.

The 19-year-old is a top target for Spurs, with The Sun reporting that Tottenham may well pay £35million to sign him, but some Tottenham fans were far from impressed.

Some believe he isn’t worth the money mentioned, branding him ‘awful’ whilst suggesting they haven’t seen anything to suggest he’d be a good signing for the club, with a few fans worried he’ll sign and Danny Rose will move on.

Others saw the bright spots in Sessegnon’s display, with one fan believing that he needs to work under Mauricio Pochettino in order to develop as hoped…
