According to a report from ESPN, Tottenham Hotspur have joined a whole host of Premier League clubs in the race to sign Schalke’s Weston McKennie.
The American midfielder is expected to leave the Royal Blues this summer with the likes of Liverpool, Everton, Leicester City, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United all interested.
Spurs are the latest club to join the race for McKennie, and the report claims that Jose Mourinho’s side are debating whether to buy the American or focus on signing Southampton’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
A move for the Saints midfielder seems to be Tottenham’s preferred option this summer according to various report,s but that deal will not be easy to complete.
The Daily Echo claimed earlier today that Everton had outbid Tottenham with their bid for Hojbjerg. The midfielder’s preferred destination is a move to North London but, if Spurs don’t come up with the money, they might not have a chance at all.
That opens the door for McKennie, who is expected to be cheaper than Hojbjerg. Schalke are allegedly looking for a fee up to £27 million, but the report says that English clubs are confident of getting him for just £18 million.

That could prove to be a very good deal in the coming years. McKennie, still only 21, has shown a lot of maturity in his game already. Under a manager like Mourinho, his positioning and game management will improve massively, which would make him an even better player.
Some Spurs fans took to Twitter to express their views about McKennie. Here is how a few of them reacted:
