Tottenham Hotspur fans on Twitter are berating their failure to sign Frenkie De Jong.

The Ajax midfielder, who will join Barcelona in a £65 million deal this summer [The Sun], could have signed for Tottenham last summer.

The 21-year-old revealed in the May edition of Four Four Two that Spurs would have suited his game, but claims that he felt obligated to do another season with his boyhood club.

The North Londoners didn’t sign anybody last summer, and fans of the Lilywhites are wondering what could have been, in light of De Jong’s revelation.

Here is how they reacted:

You can understand the fans’ disappointment over it not happening, because Harry Kane, Dele Alli, Christian Eriksen and De Jong in the same first XI would have been a sight to behold.

Still, Tottenham move into their £1 billion stadium tonight and chairman Daniel Levy hinted via Sky Sports that a summer spending spree could follow.

The disappointment over De Jong won’t last long if Levy and Mauricio Pochettino lure other big talents to North London this summer.
