Tottenham Hotspur have secured a short-term extension for defender Jan Vertonghen, but he will still leave the club on a free transfer this summer.

Spurs will need to find a replacement. Eric Dier at least provides another option in defence now he appears to be playing at centre back under Jose Mourinho, whilst Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez are also available.

The global pandemic will have naturally hit the Tottenham budget, so any incoming needs to be a bargain addition that doesn’t break the bank.

The Sunday Mirror (21/06, p72) claim that Spurs are now leading the race to sign Beijing Guoan defender Kim Min-jae, ahead of other Premier League clubs.

It’s stated that Son Heung-min – Kim’s international teammate – could be key to negotiations, with Spurs seemingly hoping he can tempt the defender to join.

Beijing Guoan would allegedly want £13.5million for Kim, which could fit into Tottenham’s budget. With Son on board at Tottenham, a move to Spurs could be appealing.

Kim is big and strong at 6ft 3in tall, and can also carry the ball out of defence, meaning he may remind some fans of Harry Maguire.

The 23-year-old has real potential and has been branded ‘Monster’ – leaving some Spurs fans excited about a potential move.

Supporters took to Twitter to urge the club to ‘make it happen’, with many South Korean fans particularly excited to potentially see him link up with Son at club level.
