Tottenham Hotspur suffered a hugely disappointing defeat and Kieran Trippier came in for plenty of criticism.
A number of Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to suggest that Kieran Trippier will be lucky to keep his place in the Spurs defence after his performance during Mauricio Pochettino’s side’s defeat on Saturday.
Tottenham suffered their second loss in as many games as Liverpool left Wembley with a 2-1 victory. Erik Lamela scored late on, but it was only a consolation for the home side after two pieces of clumsy defending helped the Reds on their way.
Trippier has enjoyed the best year of his career to date, having been such a key player in England’s squad during their run to the World Cup semi-final – his stunning free-kick in the early stages against Croatia have guaranteed his place in English football folklore – and his form at the start of the new Premier League season suggested that he was going to pick up where he left off.
But his display against Liverpool left a number of Spurs supporters suggesting that he should not be in the team when Tottenham are facing a club that are likely to be in title contention.
He struggled to cope with the away side’s attacking strength and was not at his best when it came to providing support going forward.
And some fans suggested that Serge Aurier or Kyle Walker-Peters should get the opportunity to impress in the near future, which is a surprise given how well Trippier has done for club and country in recent months.
