Tottenham Hotspur served up a dismal performance on Sunday afternoon, losing 1-0 at home to Newcastle United.

Spurs went into the game having been unconvincing in their 3-1 win over Aston Villa and their 2-2 draw at Manchester City, and fans were expecting much better against Newcastle.

After all, Steve Bruce had lost both of his games in charge of the Magpies, and few were giving Newcastle a chance of picking up anything in North London.

However, they defended brilliantly, stifling Tottenham with 10 men behind the ball for much of the game, but they managed to unpick the Spurs back line for the only goal of the game as Joelinton scored from Christian Atsu’s pass.

Mauricio Pochettino threw on Christian Eriksen and Giovani Lo Celso to try and break Newcastle down, but nothing worked as Spurs went from side to side without much penetration.

New signing Lo Celso made his home debut with that appearance, with many fans seeing him in action for the first time since his deadline day loan move from Real Betis.

Lo Celso’s cameo drew mixed responses, with some feeling that he isn’t of the standard required to improve Spurs and reminded one fan of Vincent Janssen, with others asking whether Spurs are actually forced to sign him or not.

Others saw the bright spots in Lo Celso’s display, as he played a nice ball through to Harry Kane for a penalty shout, with some seeing enough in his game to be encouraged, even feeling he’s exactly what Spurs need in midfield.
