In truth, Spurs haven’t really replaced the influence or quality of Jan Vertonghen, and signing a left-footed centre back to finally succeed him would be smart.
It now seems that Spurs do have a target in mind for that role, with Fabrizio Romano claiming that Tottenham hold an interest in signing Lille’s Sven Botman.
Spurs allegedly looked into signing Botman in January, as did Liverpool, but the Dutchman appears to be more of a summer target.
Botman only joined Lille last summer as they snatched him away from Ajax as their new left-footed centre back, replacing Gabriel Magalhaes following his move to Arsenal.
The 21-year-old hadn’t even played for Ajax before making his move, but has now emerged as one of the top young centre backs in Europe having starred for Lille alongside Jose Fonte.
Tottenham fans have been taking to Twitter to react to Romano’s claim, with fans begging Spurs to bring him in as Vertonghen’s long-term successor.
Others think that a deal for Botman would be huge, and think Romano’s tweet is a sign that Spurs really do have a chance to win the race for his signature.
