Everton have bid £45 million for a player sold by Tottenham three seasons ago.
At the end of last year, Tottenham head coach Mauricio Pochettino suggested the club had made a mistake selling Gylfi Sigurdsson.
Ahead of a clash between Spurs and the Swans, he was quoted by The Mirror: “I think he is a perfect player for us. But, in that moment, it was the club’s decision, his decision to move to Swansea and find another way. It’s a shame.”
Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy will this evening be kicking himself too, having seen Swansea reject a huge £45 million offer for the midfielder from Everton.
Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson in action
Wales Online report Swansea are holding out for £50 million – a high figure for the player despite his impressive return of 10 goals and 13 assists last season.
That’s more than the eight goals in 58 games he managed for Tottenham, and perhaps justifies from an individual point of view his desire to move on, to develop and flourish as a player.
Swansea City’s Gylfi Sigurdsson celebrates
Swansea’s valuation and Everton’s huge bid appear to have blown Spurs out of the water, with the Welsh side demanding double what Tottenham were preparing to pay.
Sigurdsson moving to Everton could have repercussions for Spurs, by pushing transfer target Ross Barkley closer to the exit door.
Tottenham are yet to make any signings this transfer window, while Everton have already made eight additions and are continuing to make bids which would break their club record.
