The Tottenham Hotspur midfielder could not stop his side from losing against Manchester United.
Tottenham Hotspur headed into their Premier League clash against Manchester United knowing they could potentially move ahead of Jose Mourinho’s side with a healthy victory. However that was not to be, with Spurs losing 1-0 after Anthony Martial’s late strike after coming off the bench.
Without the injured Harry Kane it was up to some of Tottenham’s other star names to step up, with Dele Alli chief among them, yet the England midfielder had another disappointing game just when Spurs needed him most.
Alli is still only 21 and is years away from his peak, but Tottenham fans are well aware what he is capable of and he needs to perform consistently with or without Kane ahead of him.
This match was crying out for a moment of magic from the former MK Dons player, with United and Tottenham cancelling each other out for much of the encounter, only for Martial to come off the bench and supply the defining contribution that had previously been missing.
There are still plenty of reasons for Tottenham fans to feel positive but, if Mauricio Pochettino’s side is to push on and win some silverware this season, they need their star names to justify the hype on the biggest occasions of all.
