The Spurs Twitter account asked fans to name the third scorer from the 2002 win over Rovers and some decided to poke fun at the post.
Tottenham Hotspur fans will surely have been buoyed by Liverpool’s defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League on Thursday night, a result which blows the title race wide open and keeps Spurs within six points of top spot.
However, any thoughts about the league will need to be put on ice for a week as Tottenham have two games coming up in the next few days which are crucial to their hopes of other silverware.
First up is Friday’s FA Cup third-round trip to Tranmere Rovers, who are ninth in the League Two table, and despite the disparity in league positions, one must never get too complacent as that’s one of the first steps towards being on the receiving end of a giant-killing.
That said, Spurs do have an impressive record against the Birkenhead outfit – there have been just eight games between the two over the years and the Lilywhites have won six and drawn two, according to 11v11.
In addition, Tottenham once beat Tranmere 9-1 in the FA Cup, while the last three fixtures – all in either the FA Cup or League Cup – all finished as 4-0 wins for Spurs, so there is certainly scope for optimism.
In the build-up to the game, Tottenham’s official Twitter account posted a throwback to their last meeting, the FA Cup tie on 17 February 2002, and asked fans to name the third scorer in the game alongside Christian Ziege and Gus Poyet, who bagged a brace.
