Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld’s claims he always wanted to stay put at the club have been met with a mixed response.

Alderweireld told SkySports yesterday that he never wanted to leave Spurs, amid reports linking him to Manchester United.

Alderweireld is back playing as a regular for Tottenham – crucially he has not signed a new contract.

He said: “Everyone was saying everywhere that I absolutely wanted to leave Tottenham.

“That’s not true. This summer, I quickly understood Tottenham wanted to keep me. So, I had to battle to get my place back in the team. To be in the first team again is a victory for me.”

Alderweireld starred in Tottenham’s win over Manchester United and has regained his role as a regular starter after losing it in the second half of last season following his injury.

The Manchester Evening News reported Alderweireld was valued at £55 million by Tottenham.

United did not end up submitting a bid.

Belgian website HLN reported a fortnight ago that Tottenham were planning to re-open contract talks with the defender.

Opinion from Spurs fans is split, with some happy at his comments and others reserving judgement until he signs a new deal.
