Do Tottenham Hotspur need to be worried?

Tottenham Hotspur’s star defender Toby Alderweireld has a release clause in his contract of just 30 million Euros according to Belgian newspaper Le Soir.

Working out at just over £25 million, the fee is a bargain for a player who has outstanding for Tottenham last season and has continued that form in 2016/17.

The claims come from leaked contract documents in Le Soir, and were reported also by reliable Belgian outlet HLN.

Alderweireld has been Tottenham’s best defender since signing from Atletico Madrid, after first impressing in the Premier League on loan at Southampton.

His absence has been sorely felt in recent losses against Monaco and Chelsea, and Tottenham would have a tough task in replacing him if he was sold.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is a famously tough negotiator, and the reports of a release clause being permitted in Alderweireld’s contract is uncharacteristic on his behalf.

It is on this basis that Spurs fans should have hope that this is a mix up or a situation which has since been rectified.

The Mirror report Tottenham have denied the claims… although let’s face it, would they really publicly confirm it?
