Tottenham Hotspur beat Newcastle United 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Tottenham kicked off their season in style with a 2-0 victory over newly-promoted Newcastle United at St. James’ Park on Sunday afternoon.
Spurs went into the game with major questions to answer, having failed to make any new signings over the summer, lost Kyle Walker to Manchester City and also seen full back Danny Rose suggest that he is underpaid compared to other Premier League stars.
However, Mauricio Pochettino’s men showed no signs of being distracted or lacking quality, as they picked up a 2-0 win over Rafael Benitez’s Newcastle after Jonjo Shelvey had been sent off for a stamp on Spurs ace Dele Alli.
Alli opened the scoring in the second half, converting Christian Eriksen’s pinpoint cross to make it 1-0 before Eriksen’s run allowed Ben Davies to nip into the box and finish past Rob Elliot for a rare goal from the Welshman.
It was a positive day for Tottenham after a questionable summer, with Pochettino’s men doing their talking on the pitch, as has been the way throughout his time as manager of the North London club.
However, if there was one negative from the performance, it was the display of midfielder Moussa Sissoko, who was facing Newcastle for the first time since leaving the Magpies for Tottenham last summer.
The French midfielder was heckled throughout by Newcastle fans before being substituted in favour of Son Heung-min on 58 minutes – and Spurs supporters weren’t to keen on him either.
Many suggested that Tottenham were markedly improved when Sissoko was substituted, highlighting that the two goals came shortly after he went off, with other hoping that he doesn’t play for Spurs again.
Some urged Daniel Levy to take whatever he can get for Sissoko in the hope that he will leave before this month’s transfer deadline, even noting that he looks a mere fraction of the player who impressed so much for France at Euro 2016 last summer.
