Tottenham Hotspur have announced that Marcus Edwards has left the club on a permanent basis.

A number of Tottenham fans have taken to Twitter to react to the news that the club confirmed on their official website that Marcus Edwards has left Spurs to join Portuguese side Vitoria on a permanent basis.

Edwards’ departure does not appear to have come as a major shock to the Tottenham supporters. Despite Mauricio Pochettino once likening the youngster to Lionel Messi (via Sky Sports’ live transfer blog; 2/9; 16:15), he is yet to make his Premier League debut for the club and spent last season on loan with Excelsior in the Netherlands.

His spell in the Eredivisie saw the 20-year-old show some promise, but it appeared that he had not done enough to tempt Pochettino to give him a chance with the academy graduate remaining on the periphery of the squad in the opening weeks of the season.

And the club have now confirmed on their official website that Edwards is now heading to Portugal to join Vitoria on a permanent basis.

It looks to be best for all parties that Edwards has sealed a move away before the European transfer window closes. It had got to the stage where it would have been a big surprise if he was given a future opportunity at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and he is at an age where he will be targeting regular first-team football.

Nevertheless, there is a lot of disappointment on social media that he has left having not realised his potential. Some even believe that he should not have been sold – but the majority appear to be frustrated with how his career has panned out so far.
