Tottenham’s Kevin Wimmer looks dejected
Austria played out a 2-2 draw with Wales in Vienna on Thursday night, but Tottenham defender Kevin Wimmer didn’t enjoy the best of evenings.
With World Cup qualification up for grabs, Wales travelled to Austria for a vital clash at the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, and took the lead through a superb Joe Allen strike.

Allen’s Stoke City team-mate Marko Arnautovic hit back with a smart header, before Wimmer unfortunately notched an own goal as Robert Almer’s save from a James Chester header cannoned off Wimmer and into the net.
Arnautovic equalised for a second time, meaning the two teams played out a 2-2 draw – though Wimmer may want to forget about the night.

The 23-year-old has barely featured for Tottenham this season, and doesn’t even appear to be their third-choice centre back having fallen behind Cameron Carter-Vickers in the pecking order.
Against Wales, he was deployed in an unfamiliar left back role, and he not only scored the own goal, but also awkwardly skewed a clearance in the build-up to Allen’s opener.

During and after the game, Spurs fans took to Twitter to discuss Wimmer’s performance, with many wondering just why Austria manager Marcel Koller chose to play him out of position, as it contributed to a poor performance.
Some suggested that his display summed up why he hasn’t played much for Spurs this season, but others felt he actually performed well against an attack containing former Tottenham hero Gareth Bale.
