Iceland opened up their debut European Championships campaign with a point as they defied the odds to pick up a 1-1 draw against Portugal in Saint-Etienne.
Lars Lagerback’s side were not expected to challenge in France despite coasting through qualifying, but posed a stern test for Portugal on Tuesday evening.

Portugal – with Cristiano Ronaldo in their side – did take the lead as Nani swept home from Andre Gomes’ cross, but Iceland struck back in the second half, with Birkir Bjarnason finding the net.
On a historic evening for Iceland, they did themselves proud – and their star player Gylfi Sigurdsson unsurprisingly impressed in the centre of midfield.

The Swansea City star, 26, is Iceland’s key man and lived up to his billing with a fine display, even testing Portugal goalkeeper Rui Patricio with a stinging drive early on.

Sigurdsson spent two seasons at Tottenham, scoring 13 goals in 85 games before heading back to former club Swansea City in 2014.
