Several Spurs fans have taken to Twitter to bemoan the decision to sell Andros Townsend after the winger helped knock Tottenham out of the FA Cup on Sunday.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men were beaten 2-0 by Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park, with Connor Wickham scoring inside 10 minutes before Townsend doubled the lead from the penalty spot.

Spurs had their own chance to score from the spot before the break, but Kieran Trippier’s effort went well wide of the post. That moment perhaps best summed up Tottenham’s day as they had the opportunities and applied the pressure, but could not find a way past Julian Speroni.

Townsend was arguably one of the best players on the pitch. He certainly came out on top in his battle with Kyle Walker-Peters, and that has left some Tottenham fans questioning the decision to sell him in 2016.

The 27-year-old has not always managed to make Spurs rue their decision to let him head to Newcastle. But with Pochettino’s options stretched right now due to injury, some fans clearly feel that he would have been a better option than Georges-Kevin Nkoudou.

One supporter pointed out that Spurs sold Townsend for £12 million (via BBC Sport), and spent almost the same amount on Nkoudou (£11 million, according to Sky Sports) several months later, and suggested that it has to go down as a poor piece of business.
