Some Tottenham Hotspur supporters have been reacting on social media after boss Nuno Espirito Santo claimed Ryan Sessegnon struggled on Thursday night, via football.london.

The Spurs head coach believes Sessegnon could not deliver all that he expected of the 20-year-old against Pacos de Ferreira. Nuno retained the Englishman as his left-wing option for the second-leg tie after opening last week’s first-leg defeat in Portugal.

Nuno has so far only unleashed Sessegnon in Tottenham’s Europa Conference League play-off fixtures since taking charge this summer. He left the London-born dynamo on the bench against Wolves, after omitting him from the squad to face Manchester City.

Sessegnon also struggled to establish a key role in the Tottenham first-team under Nuno’s predecessor, Jose Mourinho. The former Fulham talent, Spurs signed for £25m, played 10 games under the now-Roma manager before joining Hoffenheim on loan.

The England U21 international offered two goals and three assists over 29 games while in Germany last term. But Nuno did not see all that Sessegnon offers on Thursday.

“He is struggling,” Nuno said. “A lot of time out of competition, [but] he has talent. He is a player that can give us good things, one-vs-ones, crossing, he has energy. But he did not do all that he has today. I truly believe that he has much more that he can give.”

Some Tottenham supporters on social media tended to agree with Nuno’s assessment of Sessegnon after the Pacos de Ferreira tie. Others also reflected on the 21-year-old’s overall output since moving from west London to north in 2019.

Across his Spurs career to date, Sessegnon has scored just once and only offered one assist in 14 appearances. Yet his goal came against Bayern Munich in the Champions League as Mourinho’s men lost 3-1 at the Allianz Arena.
