Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty turned in a strong performance for the Republic of Ireland as they beat Luxembourg 3-0.

Ireland impressed in a 0-0 draw with Portugal on Thursday night, and grabbed a victory on Sunday evening.

Shane Duffy opened the scoring for Ireland before Jason Knight set up both Chiedozie Ogbene and Callum Robinson made it 3-0.

Having lost 1-0 to Luxembourg in March, Ireland needed to win this time and did exactly that.

Doherty turned in another decent performance, operating as a wing back under Stephen Kenny.

That will likely be Doherty’s role at Tottenham too now Antonio Conte is in as Spurs boss.

Doherty thrived at Wolverhampton Wanderers in a similar role, and Tottenham fans are excited about his progress of late.

Tottenham fans react to Doherty display

Is it weird that Doherty is wearing number 10 whilst playing at wing back for Ireland? Yeah, it is. Is Doherty impressing there? It certainly seems that way.

Tottenham fans have been taking to Twitter to suggest that Emerson Royal needs to perform to keep his place ahead of Doherty.

Others are already crediting Conte for Doherty’s ‘much improved’ displays for Ireland, believing he is working magic already.

Doherty was even called ‘white Cafu’, with Tottenham fans hoping his form carries over to the Premier League.
