Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly looking to sign Brighton defender Tariq Lamptey, with Antonio Conte a fan. It is believed that the right-back could cost a whopping £50million – and Spurs supporters have responded.
Lamptey, 21, joined Brighton back in January 2020 after struggling to break into Chelsea’s side on a regular basis – managing just three senior appearances. In two years, he has only played 31 times for Brighton.
However, that is largely owing to a long-term hamstring injury he picked up last season – keeping him sidelined well into the current campaign. But he is back fit and firing, and Tottenham are interested in landing the defender.
A recent report from the Evening Standard reported that Antonio Conte is not convinced by Emerson Royal, and is keen on replacing the Brazilian. The Express have now reported that Conte wants £50million-rated Lamptey.
What are Tottenham fans saying about potentially signing Lamptey?
Spurs do need a right-back. Even if Emerson remains, competition is a must. Japhet Tanganga is more suited to the right centre-back role, while Matt Doherty could end up leaving the club before the end of the window.
However, £50million is a lot of cash for a player that has played 34 games at senior level. It is similar to Everton paying more than £15million on Nathan Patterson, who had only featured for Rangers 27 times in all competitions.
Lamptey has the quality, is English, perfect for Conte’s system and would surely jump at the chance to join Spurs. But his £50million price tag is huge. Tottenham fans have reacted on Twitter, suggesting a swap deal.
