Napoli superstar Dries Mertens scored one of the 2018 World Cup’s best goals so far on Monday afternoon as Belgium earned a 3-0 win over Panama in Group G – and Tottenham fans reacted on Twitter to his sensational strike.

The 31-year-old made his 70th appearance for Belgium and scored a sensational goal that finally broke the deadlock in the 47th minute against a well-drilled, but far inferior Panama side.

Mertens hit a spectacular, looping volley over the top of Jaime Penedo, before Manchester United target man Romelu Lukaku scored two goals himself to earn a comfortable win.

Spurs were linked with exciting attacker Mertens last month, with TalkSPORT reporting that Gazzetta dello Sport had claimed that Tottenham were set to do battle with north London rivals Arsenal for Mertens signature.

Mertens has also been quoted in the media by stating that he has a £25million release clause – excellent value for a player that scored 22 goals from attacking midfield this season, 12 less than 2016-17’s spectacular campaign.

Spurs fans reacted to Mertens goal on Monday that will surely be a contender for one of the goal’s of the tournament, with one supporter Tweeting: “Agent Jan [Vertonghen], do your work.”
