Michael Owen has urged Tottenham Hotspur fans to change their attitude after the north Londoners suffered a blip in their title challenge by losing to Burnley on Saturday – and fans have reacted to the ex-England striker’s comments.
Spurs failed to close the gap on Manchester City and Liverpool over the weekend, losing to Burnley 2-1 at Turf Moor as Harry Kane’s goal was cancelled out by in-form duo Chris Wood and Ashley Barnes.
Former Liverpool and Real Madrid striker Owen told BT Sport after the match that Spurs fans need to change their Spurs ethos – from frustration at ‘bottling it’, to praise for achieving what they have.
He said: “Spurs fans need to change their attitude, I think. All the time you hear ‘oh, we are Tottenham, we always throw it away at the end’. It’s just such a negative type of attitude. I think Spurs fans need to realise that they are a proper, proper team, start believing that they are going to win because I think that transmits onto the pitch.”
The defeat to Sean Dyche’s side sees Spurs slip to six points behind leaders Liverpool, who drew 0-0 with Manchester United on Sunday. A win for Spurs would have seen that gap reduced to just three.
Spurs now have an incredibly tough run of games coming up, starting with a trip across London to take on Maurizio Sarri’s Chelsea at Stamford Bridge before another north London derby against Arsenal on Saturday.
Spurs fans reacted to Owen’s comments on Twitter, with many confused by Owen’s comments – taking his opinion as an attack on how they support their club.
