Pochettino praised Sissoko for his performance against Newcastle on Wednesday night.
Mauricio Pochettino has praised Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Moussa Sissoko after Wednesday night’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United, which has left Spurs fans in shock on Twitter.
The 28-year-old started in central midfield alongside Victor Wanyama as Spurs confirmed their top-four status for a third consecutive season, thanks to Harry Kane’s second-half strike.
Kane finished off a well-worked move to curl an effort first time into the top corner of Martin Dubravka’s goal, taking his tally for the season to an astounding 39 goals in all competitions.
Sissoko, who joined Spurs from Newcastle in the summer of 2016, impressed in the middle of the park despite boos from Toon fans and playing in a different position to his natural place out on the wing.
Pochettino was quoted by Football London as saying: “”Today for me one of the best was Moussa Sissoko. I want to say thank you for how professional he was all season. Not too many people recognise him but I think he was fantastic today.”
Former Tottenham defender Graham Roberts reacted to the comments, stating that he believes Pochettino’s comments were genuine rather than bidding farewell to Sissoko or indeed having a dig at those who criticise the France international.
Sissoko has three years remaining on his current deal at Spurs, which the Daily Star claim is worth £95,000 a week.
However, the majority of Spurs fans disagreed on Twitter, with the majority questioning Pochettino for his defence of Sissoko as their criticism of the Frenchman continued. One fan Tweeted the Spurs manager “must be blind”.
