Vertonghen has said he is expecting Tottenham to extend his contract.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has been quoted as saying that he expects to be given another 12 months on his Spurs contract – and some Spurs fans are delighted to hear his update.
The 31-year-old has told Belgian outlet HLN that he expects Spurs to offer him a new deal, in the form of activating a clause in his current deal that will extend his stay at Tottenham by another 12 months.
Vertonghen has entered the final years of his contract with the north Londoners despite being one of the top performers throughout the 2017-18 campaign, along with Mousa Dembele and Toby Alderweireld.
Speaking ahead of Belgium’s clash against Scotland, former Ajax defender Vertonghen said: “My contract is expiring at the end of the season, but Tottenham have an option to extend it with one year. I think they will take up the option.”
Since joining the club in the summer of 2012, Vertonghen has clocked up 256 league and cup appearances for Spurs but is yet to have won a trophy during his time in north London.
Some Spurs fans reacted to the news that the Belgian defender is expecting to see his club activate a clause currently inserted into his Tottenham contract, with the majority delighted that he will remain for at least another year.
