Tottenham Hotspur defender Jan Vertonghen has already had a mixed start to the season, and his contract talks look set to be a wild ride too.
Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino surprisingly chose to drop Vertonghen for the first few games of the season, before bringing him back in against Arsenal last month.
Vertonghen has slotted back into the side seamlessly, impressing alongside Toby Alderweireld once again with his experience and leadership absolutely key to this Spurs side.
However, the 32-year-old is out of contract next summer, meaning Spurs may just be months away from losing the Belgian international on a free transfer.
Now, the Daily Mail claim that contract talks with Vertonghen are set to materialise, but Tottenham are reluctant to hand him more than an extra year due to his age.
Vertonghen currently earns £100,000-a-week (Spotrac), and Spurs seemingly have reservations about giving him so much money or even more in order to stay for more than an extra year.
Many Spurs fans have taken to Twitter to react to the reports, with most demanding that Vertonghen gets two years, accusing the club of ‘messing around’ by intending to only give him another year.
Others can’t believe that Moussa Sissoko, Erik Lamela and Ben Davies have been given extensions but the club aren’t sure about Vertonghen, with some hoping he retires at Spurs and gets a testimonial match.
