Tottenham put in a decent performance but still came up short against Chelsea on Sunday evening, as the Blues secured a 2-0 win over Spurs. Tottenham fans took to Twitter to praise Eric Dier, despite the loss.

Dier, 28, returned to the starting line-up after a muscle injury that had kept him sidelined for the last two matches against Watford and Leicester. He partnered Davinson Sanchez in a 4-4-2, a surprise under Antonio Conte.

WhoScored show just how good Dier was. The defender won more aerial battles than any of his teammates despite coming up against Romelu Lukaku, with three won. He also produced two clearances and a block.

He also completed five long balls throughout the match, a key component of Conte’s tactics. But for Spurs, it was the same story. Chelsea eased to a 2-0 win in the end, largely thanks to a masterclass from Hakim Ziyech.

The Chelsea ace is beginning to show why Chelsea brought him to the club – his gorgeous effort curling into the top corner from 25 yards. Hugo Lloris did not move. Chelsea scored a second through Thiago Silva.

What are Tottenham fans saying about Dier, after Chelsea loss?

Tottenham were decent at times and perhaps unfortunate to see Harry Kane’s effort disallowed in the first half for a push on Silva. Kane tested Kepa Arrizabalaga on a couple of occasions, a header well saved, too.

Tottenham fans reacted on Twitter to the performance of Dier – and while Spurs lost, Dier was certainly a positive. Many believe he is becoming a crucial part of Conte’s long-term plan at Spurs.
