Tottenham Hotspur are through to the semi-finals of the Carabao Cup after beating West Ham United 2-1 on Wednesday night – and Matt Doherty surprised many.

Tottenham took the lead through Steven Bergwijn but were quickly pegged back by a fine Jarrod Bowen goal.

Bergwijn then set up Lucas Moura to put Tottenham back in front – a third goal in the space of six minutes.

West Ham pushed for another leveller but couldn’t find it, meaning Tottenham go through to the last four.

Having reached the final last year, Tottenham will now want to do it again – but will now have to see off Chelsea in January.

Antonio Conte rotated his side and gave chances to some of his fringe Tottenham players.

One of them was right back Matt Doherty, who came in for Emerson Royal at right wing back,

The Irishman hasn’t managed to find top form since joining from Wolverhampton Wanderers for £15million in 2020, and some feel he may be sold soon.

Doherty needed to take his chance against West Ham, and fans seemed impressed after a slow start.

Some feel Doherty has improved under Conte praising him for a ‘great’ and ‘class’ performance.

Others ‘hate to say it’ but think Doherty could even offer more than Emerson Royal, believing there is hope for him at Tottenham after all.
