Tottenham Hotspur last night announced the signing Spanish goalkeeper Pau Lopez from La Liga side Espanyol.
Lopez signed on a loan deal, with the club website confirmed he has been handed the number 30 shirt.
Despite his addition, Lopez’s chance of first team football do not really look assured.
Hugo Lloris is a clear cut first choice and Michel Vorm has proven to be a very able deputy.
Tottenham’s Hugo Lloris in action
Lloris is out injured at present, but is expected to be back in mid to late September.
Spurs did loan out youngster Luke McGee to Peterborough, meaning Lopez is an assured third choice, but it remains to be seen if he will ever be more than that.
It is likely he could make his debut in the Capital One Cup later this month.
Lopez does provide useful insurance for Vorm while Lloris is out, and to that end it is a sensible addition, but long term if Spurs are to sign the promising 21-year-old, it may suggest Vorm could leave in a year’s time.
Tottenham’s Michel Vorm punches clear
His addition has brought a mixed reaction, with supporters pleased to see a new arrival but unsure of where he fits into Mauricio Pochettino’s grand plan.
