Spurs booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 3-1 win over West Ham.
Tottenham Hotspur’s defensive rearguard helped them grind out a 3-1 win at the London Stadium over West Ham United in the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night – but some Tottenham fans were not impressed with Victor Wanyama.
Spurs were forced to rely on a makeshift defence of Kyle Walker-Peters, Juan Foyth, Davinson Sanchez and Serge Aurier, while Argentine goalkeeper Paulo Gazzaniga was given a chance between the sticks.
But it was the performance of Sanchez and most notably Foyth, who helped keep West Ham at bay with some excellent tackles and blocks throughout. Foyth saved almost a certain goal, with a last-ditch tackle on Marko Arnautovic.
Spurs went 2-0 up thanks to a well-taken brace from Son Heung-min, scoring both goals on the counter attack. Lucas Perez scored his first for West Ham from a corner to reduce the deficit, before Fernando Llorente sealed the win late on.
However, Tottenham fans were not impressed with the performance of midfielder Victor Wanyama on Wednesday night, after the Kenya captain made just his third start of the season in all competitions for Spurs.
The former Southampton man looked sluggish and was guilty of giving the ball away on numerous occasions. Spurs fans slammed the 27-year-old for his performance, with one fan stating that Wanyama’s form is “worrying”.
