Spurs headed into the game having suffered embarrassment at the hands of Colchester United in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, and really needed a response.
Tanguy Ndombele set them on their way with a deflected opener, only for Serge Aurier to pick up a red card for two bookings and Hugo Lloris to commit a bizarre error to gift Danny Ings a goal.
Spurs looked to be shooting themselves in the foot once again, but Harry Kane put Mauricio Pochettino’s side back in front – and that’s how it stayed as Spurs ran out 2-1 winners.
That’s exactly what Spurs needed, as they not only showed their quality but also their grit and determination as they claimed all three points.
A number of players impressed in the win, but midfielder Harry Winks will be particularly proud of his own performance having impressed in the middle of the park.
Winks, 23, has been criticised at times this season, with fans blasting him against Manchester City, but he has been hailed on Twitter after his performance against Southampton.
Some praised Winks as the best player on the pitch on Saturday, calling him ‘brilliant’ and even ‘massively underrated’, hailing him as a powerhouse whilst comparing him to Mousa Dembele or even Scott Parker, two former key parts of the Spurs midfield.
