Tottenham have reportedly opened talks and made an enquiry to sign Leicester City playmaker James Maddison this week – a player that Harry Redknapp once told would be in his England side “every day of the week”.

Little surprise. Maddison was sensational for Leicester last season. The 25-year-old had a hand in an enormous 30 goals during his 52 games – scoring 18 and creating 12. But Leicester may be forced into a big-name sale.

The spiraling wages are not seen as sustainable and it means the Foxes may have to wave goodbye to one of their top earners. Maddison is certainly that, and reports since say that Spurs have opened talks for the £60m-rated player.

A player that ex-Tottenham manager Redknapp once told, face to face, would be in his England side if he was manager of Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions. Maddison, somehow, has only picked up one England cap during his career.

‘We’ve been short of that person who can just do something fantastic and I would have you in the England team every day of the week, I really would,” Redknapp told Maddison, as quoted by The Mail in 2020.

Rightly so. It was a mystery as to why Maddison was overlooked during the last round of international fixtures following his form in a Leicester shirt during the 2021-22 campaign. Spurs have made moves in the window.

Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma, Clement Lenglet and Richarlison are wonderful signings. Maddison would eclipse the lot. At £60million, he is certainly expensive and there would also be question marks as to how he fits into the system.

Conte has played a 3-4-3 system at Tottenham so far. But at Inter, he managed to combine Christian Eriksen into a 3-4-1-2 formation. Playing Maddison behind say, Harry Kane and Son Heung-min, would be incredible.
