Tottenham are reportedly planning a move to sign Leeds United winger Dan James in the remaining days of the summer window – a player that Tim Sherwood loves, branding his style as playing at “100 miles per hour”.

James, 24, has endured a difficult start to life at Leeds. Having almost joined the club during the promotion year of 2020, Wales international James finally completed a £25million move to Leeds last summer from Manchester United.

But the wide man has been forced to play up front for Leeds for much of his first 12 months at Elland Road. That is because of Patrick Bamford being injured last season. He could not force his way into the side in his natural position.

Indeed, Jack Harrison was on the left and Raphinha was on the right. Raphinha has left, but the club have spent £26million on a replacement in Luis Sinisterra. So, game time is up in the air, and Tottenham could make a move.

Indeed, reports claim that Tottenham are planning a shock £20million move for James in the final days of the window. Last summer, after joining Leeds, Sherwood gave his verdict on James – claiming he is the “perfect fit” for Leeds.

“Dan James fits 1 million per cent to their style. 100 miles an hour, very direct, dribbler of the ball,” ex-Tottenham manager Sherwood told Sky Sports News on October 16, 2021 – as quoted by HITC Sport.

Sherwood loves Leeds winger James: Tottenham planning move

Do Tottenham really need James? In the final third, they have Son Heung-min, Harry Kane and Dejan Kulusevski. Richarlison and Lucas Moura are acting as cover. If James was used as a wing-back, Spurs also have plenty of cover.

At right-back – Emerson Royal, Djed Spence and Matt Doherty, and Mours if needed. On the left, Sergio Reguilon remains despite West Ham interest and Nottingham Forest talks. Ryan Sessegnon and Ivan Perisic are the two options.

So, it is unclear as to why Tottenham feel they need James. Saying that, if the likes of Bryan Gil – who is set to go – and Moura end up leaving in the next few days, the need for James suddenly increases.
