Tottenham are reportedly ‘exploring’ a move to re-sign Kyle Walker-Peters from Southampton – Harry Winks said he has “amazing quality” when discussing his old teammate’s performance after a draw with Manchester City.
Walker-Peters, 25, has spent the last two and a half years with Southampton. Leaving Spurs initially on loan in January 2020, Walker-Peters has gone on to become an England international after clocking up 82 Saints appearances.
It is a stark contrast to his time at Spurs. Man of the match against Newcastle on professional debut, Walker-Peters only played 24 times for Tottenham’s senior side. Some say that the move to sell him was a mistake.
It has turned out to be the case. The Athletic state Tottenham have a buyback clause of £30million, but Arsenal and Manchester United are also keen. CBS Sports reporter Ben Jacobs says Spurs are ‘exploring’ a deal to sign him.

Back in August 2019, Walker-Peters started alongside Winks during a 2-2 draw with Manchester City for Spurs. After the match, Winks raved about his Spurs academy teammate’s performance – saying he has “amazing quality”.
“There is no bigger test than playing Manchester City away and being up against Sterling, but he handled it exceptionally well. I thought he was fantastic on Saturday,” Winks said three years ago, on Tottenham’s website.
“Physically he’s still working hard but with his whole defensive reading of the game and making big, important tackles and blocks, he’s been excellent and really worked hard on everything. On the ball he has an amazing quality.”

What Tottenham must weigh up, is whether Walker-Peters is firstly, an improvement on what they have – and then, is he worth buying instead of Djed Spence? Emerson Royal has struggled at Spurs, Matt Doherty has improved.
Arguably, keeping Doherty and bringing in a new right wing-back in place of Emerson makes sense. Spence is likely to cost £20million. Younger, but without Premier League experience. Walker-Peters is an improvement.
But is he worth £30million – the clause Spurs boast in his Southampton contract? Perhaps. He is still relatively fresh for his age – and now an England international, he is arguably cheap. Spurs must seriously consider a move.
