Jermaine Jenas has criticised Emerson Royal after a ‘ridiculous’ no-look pass attempt against Sporting on Wednesday night.

Tottenham returned to Champions League action on Wednesday and were hoping to avenge a 2-0 defeat to Sporting in September.

Instead, former Tottenham talent Marcus Edwards came back to haunt his former club with a low left-footed strike from distance.

Tottenham did level it up through Rodrigo Bentancur’s header but couldn’t secure a 2-1 victory.

Harry Kane’s last-gasp winner was controversially disallowed and Tottenham aren’t quite secure of their last 16 place just yet.

Jermaine Jenas has criticised Emerson Royal

Tottenham again weren’t at their best going forward and Antonio Conte is lacking difference makers on the bench right now.

Bryan Gil looked very bright but wing back Emerson Royal didn’t really offer a huge threat.

The Brazilian has spent almost a year playing as a wing back under Conte but still doesn’t look entirely comfortable there.

Everyone can see Emerson’s athletic abilities but his technical ability and decision making in the final third haven’t hit the mark.

Emerson started last night’s game on the bench but came on for Matt Doherty with Tottenham chasing a goal.

The 23-year-old didn’t great a chance or take a shot, failed to register an accurate cross and only found a teammate with 50% of his passes.

That’s not great but it all could have been different if Kane’s goal – from a Emerson header – had counted.

One moment really left fans baffled as Tottenham chased a winner.

Ivan Perisic switched the ball over to Emerson, who then attempted a no-look pass towards winger Gil, but got it all wrong as his pass harmlessly went out of play.

Pundit and former Tottenham ace Jermaine Jenas was fuming on BT Sport, stating that Emerson’s attempt to play a no-look was ‘ridiculous’.

Jenas added that Tottenham were really building the pressure on Sporting but Emerson let them off the book by attempting a pass he couldn’t pull off.

“That’s ridiculous,” said Jenas. “He’s got acres of space to put this ball into the box, if you’re going to do it, at least have the quality to do it.”

“It was a good bit of play, the pressure was building again and then you’re just letting a team off the hook. It’s not the time to be doing that,” he added.
