Tottenham Hotspur dodged a big bullet over Alvaro Morata.

Tottenham Hotspur haven’t got a lot to be thankful for at the moment.

They have been eliminated from two very winnable competitions in the space of three days, and their two best players, Harry Kane and Dele Alli, will miss the whole month of February.

In addition to that, Tottenham also haven’t signed any players this month and it remains to be seen if they will before Thursday’s deadline day.

All in all, things aren’t rosy for Spurs at the minute, but they might take some solace in the fact that they dodged a big bullet with Alvaro Morata some years ago.

The Chelsea striker is on the verge of joining Atletico Madrid on loan [BBC Sport] and it seems very plausible that the Blues’ £70 million signing [The Independent] will never play for them again.

Lilywhites boss Mauricio Pochettino revealed via The Telegraph 18 months ago that the Spanish hitman rejected the chance to join the North Londoners a few years ago, citing Harry Kane’s presence at White Hart Lane as a reason to steer clear.

He wouldn’t have cost £70 million at the time, but he wouldn’t have been cheap, by virtue of the fact that he was either at Real Madrid or Juventus at the time of Spurs’ apparent interest.

He was by no means an unknown quantity, but he was younger and it makes you wonder whether Pochettino, the man-manager that he is, could have developed him better, hardening him for the rigours of Premier League football.

We’ll never know.
