Tottenham Hotspur have been linked with the young centre-back.

According to the Daily Mail, Tottenham Hotspur are tracking Stevenage defender Ben Wilmot, but Spurs do not need another promising young centre-back given the players already at their disposal.

Tottenham are always going to build for the future, and looking at the next generation of talent allows them to plan ahead. However the presence of Juan Foyth, Davinson Sanchez, Eric Dier and Cameron Carter-Vickers at the club means Wilmot would struggle to make any sort of impact in North London.

Even if Jan Vertonghen and Toby Aldwerweireld head for pastures new in the latter years of their respective careers, Tottenham are still well stocked and that is without factoring in their under-23 and under-19 prospects, with the versatile Oliver Skipp a notable option.

When Wilmot does leave Stevenage he will be hoping to sign for a side where first-team chances are on the cards and, while that can usually be said of Tottenham, he would be joining a club that already has some of the best young defenders in Europe no their books.

For once, a move to Mauricio Pochettino’s side may not be the best option for this talented youngster, at least not at this stage of his promising career.

Tottenham could ultimately get the best out of him, but at some point they need to sit back and accept that a certain position is as strong as it can be.
