Ryan Sessegnon got his first Premier League goal for Tottenham this weekend, and there’s reason to believe that there will be plenty more where that came from.
The 22-year-old drifted in at the back post to finish a fine header, and while this is the first time Spurs fans have seen Sessegnon score a goal in the league, Fulham fans will tell you that Sessegnon can be absolutely clinical.
The youngster netted 17 league goals during the 2017/18 season at Fulham back when he was just a teenager, and most of those goals came when he was playing on the left wing.
Of course, these days Sessegnon is seen as more of a wing-back, but in the not-so-distant future, he could once again be joining the attack.
Indeed, the signing of Destiny Udogie this week may well see Sessegnon pushed further forward at Spurs in a few years’ time.
The left-wing spot at Spurs is pretty secure at the moment with Heung-Min Son occupying that role, so Sessegnon probably won’t get much of a look-in anytime soon, but let’s not forget, Son is 30 now.
Sessegnon is eight years younger than Son, while Udogie is 11 years his junior, these two may well be around once the South Korean is long gone, and if that’s the case, Sessegnon could well return to playing as a winger now that Udogie has been brought in as a potential long-term left-back option.
The former Fulham man was at his best on the wing during his time at Craven Cottage. He won a clean sweep of EFL awards while playing that role, while his finishing and positional awareness in and around the box was second-to-none.
That sort of attacking instinct never leaves a player, and while Sessegnon may need some finetuning, he could well move further forward once he matures and Udogie settles in at Spurs.
Sessegnon may be a defender right now, but don’t be surprised if he once again becomes a goal machine as a winger at Tottenham a few years down the line.
