Tottenham defender second-best in the league when it comes to vital stat

Tottenham Hotspur full-back Kyle Walker has made an impressive 30 key passes in the Premier League.

Prior to Manchester United’s siege on Fulham’s goal on Sunday, Tottenham’s Kyle Walker had played more key passes than any other defender in the Premier League this season.

He sat atop the table with 30, while Patrice Evra came in two behind. But the Frenchman’s five key passes against the Cotttagers saw him overtake the England international and render my headline a little less impressive than it would otherwise have been.

But that is no reason not to write the story, because Walker’s achievement is an impressive one regardless, and shows a player with a vital additional string to his bow.

As you can see from the table below, Walker is ahead of the Everton pair Seamus Coleman and Leighton Baines, and Manchester City full-back Aleksandar Kolarov. And given his impressive record to date, there is no reason why the Spurs man cannot be topping the table again soon enough.

In fact, Walker’s record is even more impressive when you take into account the fact that he has played only one key pass less than Christian Eriksen (although the summer signing has played considerably less minutes).

Eriksen is regarded as something of a magician when it comes to creating chances, so for Walker to be keeping pace is quite an achievement.

But for all those key passes, Walker only has two assists to his name in the league. In part that is down to the players to whom the chances are given. After all, it takes another man to turn a key pass into an assist and all Walker can do is play the initial ball.

With Emmanuel Adebayor in fine form, and Spurs likely to bring in at least one new striker next summer, Walker could soon be racking up assist stats every bit as impressive as those for key passes. And then Spurs will have a real player on their hands.
