Tottenham defender is glad to get back to playing regularly.
Tottenham Hotspur defender Toby Alderweireld says he is glad to have proved a point at the World Cup.
Alderweireld got injured on November 1 playing for Spurs in a 3-1 win over Real Madrid, and upon his return in February, was used sparingly.
He was left out of Tottenham’s big matches, including their FA Cup semi-final defeat to Manchester United.
Manager Mauricio Pochettino felt he had better options, and kept Alderweireld on the bench, save for a couple of late season appearances.
Alderweireld got back to playing regularly at the World Cup, and feels like he has proved a point with Belgium finishing third.
He said: “I was very focused on this tournament. I wanted to prove something again.
“[To] show that the period before the tournament in which I did not play – for whatever reason – that it was unjustified. I wanted to show that I am still the same Toby as in November.”
Alderweireld has been linked with a transfer away from Tottenham all summer, and he claims to be none the wiser on what his future holds.
He added: “I really do not know anything yet. In my head I just go to Tottenham. We’ll see.”
The Belgian defender has two years left on his contract at Spurs, but in a year’s time, a clause can be activated by clubs, enabling them to buy him for a cut-price fee.
Spurs are hoping to extend his contract but if they are unable to do so, a sensible financial decision may be to cash in.
