Tottenham have made incredible progress, but did they pass up on the final piece of the jigsaw in Celtic ace Moussa Dembele?
Tottenham manager Mauricio Pochettino and chairman Daniel Levy
Tottenham Hotspur appear set to narrowly miss out on the Premier League title once again, presently sitting just four points behind leaders Chelsea.
Their tale is one of terrific consistency and great coaching, only to be let down by disappointing transfer moves which could have helped them get over the line.
The biggest error is the decision to back out of signing Fulham prodigy Moussa Dembele last January.
SkySports reported how the Frenchman was at Spurs for a medical, before the Premier League side backed out of a deal.
Moussa Dembele at Fulham
Fulham kept hold of the striker that transfer window and Tottenham didn’t add a striker at all, eventually slipping to third place despite having leaders Leicester City within their reach with four games remaining.
In the summer Dembele signed for Celtic and has gone onto score at a prolific rate, in both the Premier League and Champions League, surpassing the 30 goal mark.
With Dembele on board Spurs could easily be celebrating two league titles, instead of wondering if they will simply be perennial also rans.
Can it be redressed?
Spurs attempted to bounce back from their Dembele miss by signing Vincent Janssen last summer, but the Dutchman has been a flop, scoring only two Premier League goals.
A move for Dembele is possible this summer, SkyBet rate it as 7/1, but Tottenham will have to spend serious money to get him.
Celtic’s Moussa Dembele celebrates scoring against Manchester City
Celtic value the young striker at a whopping £40 million, SkySports reported, a fee which would be Tottenham’s record signing.
London rivals Chelsea are now sniffing around, targeting Dembele in late January, and the Evening Standard report he is on a three man shortlist for the Blues this summer.
If he makes the move to Stamford Bridge, Tottenham’s error could be even more costly than it has been already.
