The Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper has received heavy criticism in recent weeks.
Former Tottenham goalkeeper Tony Parks sat down for an exclusive interview with the Sun, and offered words of support for under-fire Spurs stopper Hugo Lloris, suggesting that he remains an extremely important player for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
Lloris, 32, has made numerous high-profile errors for Spurs this season, but at the same time, he has put in some superb displays – most notably at home to Arsenal in the Premier League and away at Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.
The France international joined Tottenham from Lyon in the summer of 2012, for a fee believed to be worth £8 million, and he has gone on to make 288 appearances for the north London outfit.
And Parks, who won the UEFA Cup with Spurs in 1984, backed Lloris to rise above the recent criticism that he has received, when speaking exclusively to the Sun:
“I watched his career progress and when I got the opportunity to bring him to Tottenham it was a no-brainer. The best goalkeepers are the best between their ears. They have that resilience to mistakes. The likes of Ray Clemence and Hugo Lloris, they are a cut above. If you go back through history, you will see Ray Clemence, Peter Shilton, Gordon Banks, Lev Yashin, all greats, have made mistakes. Hugo will be like that. He makes far more saves and does more good.”
Next up for Tottenham is their Champions League clash with Manchester City tomorrow night, and the spotlight will be on Lloris once again.
And the Frenchman must put in a flawless display if his Spurs are to keep the Premier League champions at bay for 90 minutes.
