Tottenham Hotspur may have endured a difficult summer having failed to bring in any new signings, but 2019 may be a little more exciting for disgruntled Spurs fans.

Mauricio Pochettino couldn’t add any quality to his squad over the summer, leaving him to largely work with the squad which finished last season.

However, Spurs should have money to spend in January after a signing-less summer, and the Daily Mail report of two targets that have been on Pochettino’s radar.

It’s claimed that Spurs wanted Monaco midfielder Youri Tielemans over the summer, whilst Brentford forward Ollie Watkins is also on Tottenham’s radar after impressing in the Championship.

Monaco may have stood firm on Tielemans over the summer, but Spurs should certainly return for the Belgian in January, in what would be a hugely exciting move.

Tielemans, 21, is a talented young midfielder with great quality on the ball, athleticism and long-range shooting ability, and would be a real coup for Spurs in January as they look to sign Mousa Dembele’s successor.

Spurs would have to pay up for the former Anderlecht star, but with Monaco struggling this season, Pochettino must push for a new attempt to be made for Tielemans in order to try and make him Tottenham’s first signing of 2019.

Additionally, Brentford attacker Watkins has starred in the Championship, notching four goals and two assists in 11 games this season, as well as 10 goals and four assists last term.

A versatile, quick and skilful forward who can play up front or out wide, Watkins can offer real quality in either role, covering for Harry Kane whilst offering competition to Pochettino’s wingers.

Watkins, 22, is exactly the sort of signing Spurs should be making. Top Championship players like Lewis Cook, Will Hughes, Joe Gomez and James Maddison should have been top targets for Spurs, but ended up with Premier League rivals, where their price tags are rising and rising.

Getting in now for Watkins would be a smart move, and paired up with Tielemans, Pochettino would be bringing two exciting signings to North London in 2019.
