Tottenham could now reportedly make a move to sign Sporting Lisbon midfielder Manuel Ugarte after contract talks between the Uruguayan and the Portuguese giants recently collapsed.

According to Record, the north London side could soon step up their efforts to sign Ugarte following the news that Sporting have failed in their latest round of talks with the 21-year-old to sign him down to a new contract, something that will be of great interest to Tottenham.

Record have previously reported that Antonio Conte’s side were scouting Ugarte at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, with the midfielder regarded as one of the most exciting talents coming out of South America following an impressive year at Sporting.

With a release clause of €60m (£53m), it will take some financial effort from Tottenham to sign Ugarte in January, though there is every chance that Daniel Levy could gift Conte the funds to make some major moves in the winter transfer window.

Indeed, Ugarte would be quite the addition for Tottenham given how much Spurs’ midfield is in need of a revamp, with many supporters disgruntled with how stale and static some performances have been this season despite results going their way.

And this latest update could be major in Tottenham’s road to sign Ugarte, with the midfielder rejecting a new deal a big sign that the youngster wants a new challenge in Europe, one that Conte’s side could easily provide in the January transfer window.

Signings are needed for Tottenham in January if Conte and Levy are to win the trust of supporters, and Ugarte would be a big step in the right direction given how exciting the Sporting midfielder is and how much the youngster would bring to the squad.

Versatile and accomplished in numerous midfield roles, Ugarte has the potential to become a star with Tottenham if a deal can be completed in the coming weeks, and Spurs must move fast if they’re to win the race to sign the promising talent.
